Current research and reports do suggest that UVB is helpful in promoting plant growth and controlling pests and diseases.

"UVB prevention and control of common pests and diseases" if the spread, then the demand for UVB mercury lamp will be great. The planting area of strawberry in our country has 2 million mu only, convert into the demand of UVB mercury lamp will reach above 100 million. And mercury lamp life is shorter, 1000~2000 hours. This means that for strawberry cultivation alone, consumption of UVB mercury lamps will also be in the hundreds of millions per year. When it comes to other crops, demand is even more dire.

Mercury lamp contains a few to a few tens of milligrams of mercury, such a large amount of mercury lamp consumption, even if the waste of mercury lamp treatment mechanisms, resulting in environmental pollution pressure should not be underestimated. Since its accession to the minamata convention, China has made clear its attitude to the use of mercury containing products. Uvb-led based on the third generation wide band gap semiconductor AlGaN material will be the new generation of light source, but at present, the performance of UVB based on LED is far from the standard of agricultural application, so it cannot replace mercury lamp for pest control.

It can be seen that the plant lighting industry, UVB pest control as a new application market has considerable research value and broad market. However, due to environmental pollution, the existing reported UVB mercury lamps should not be widely used. Uvb-led is expected to be incorporated into the plant factory lighting concept together with visible light LED, which is expected to be applied on a large scale through the upgrade of technical performance in the next few years and the sharp decline in price.
