We all know that plastic-encapsulated laser diodes are not common in daily life, so why are plastic-encapsulated laser diodes quoted so cheaply by suppliers? Let's take a look at it together.
The packaging method is cheap.
Plastic packaging is actually sticking the chip on it, and then the resin is packaged and cured. The packaging process is short, the material cost is low, there is no metal shell, no Shi Ying window and no vacuum welding.
The heat dissipation structure is simple and does not need complicated design.
Plastic-encapsulated LD basically does not consider high-power heat dissipation requirements, and belongs to light-load devices.
Unlike TO package and butterfly package, it also includes heat sink structure, chip bonding, collimating optics and metal shell isolation.
Plastic packaging means that it can be used brightly, and the heat dissipation depends on PCB and air, which further reduces the cost.
3. The application scenario determines the price
Plastic-sealed LD is mainly used in these places: laser positioning, laser toys, laser pens, simple sensors, and low-power sections in laser levels.
In fact, these applications do not need long service life, temperature control system, line width, wavelength drift and other indicators, as long as they are bright, usable and low cost.
Plastic LD is cheap not because it is poor, but because it is positioned as a low-power, low-precision, mass-produced consumer market.
It can be sold cheaply because it doesn't do unnecessary things.
